The Third Wheel

Have you ever wondered why every morning you have to haggle over fares with the autos? The excuse that they give is that they won’t receive any passenger while returning from the place they drop you at. And no sooner he drops you to your destination and you overlook the whole affair until next morning.

This is our side of the story. One that has been hotly debated, discussed and publicized. There is yet another unheard side. One that does not make it the national dailies, is not debated in the Parliament, and does not trigger any movements or reforms.
Shockingly an auto rickshaw cost Rs.4, 90,000 in Delhi including permit/ badge costs while in other cities, it is only Rs.1, 25,000! One wonders why is only a particular model of a particular brand of auto rickshaws allowed. Why not second hand cars? Why is there no bank finance facility available to them for buying auto rickshaws? One should also bear in mind that fare in Delhi is the lowest of all major cities. The auto that sustains his livelihood is merely ‘a white elephant’!

And what is the government doing?
Apathetic to the ever-growing demand for public transport, government has no intention to review the ceiling on number of auto rickshaws. If the government opens up permits or abolishes permit system, the rentals for the vehicle would automatically come down, hence helping the auto rickshaw drivers to earn an honest living.
The root of all the problems, it is the government-controlled system and the License-permit raaj.

We at Prabodh, in the commuter’s interest, are advocating for ‘More’- that’s what the commuters deserve.
More choice, higher competition and low fares!
Imagine a scenario where autowalas line up to take you at lowest prices and yet they earn well, their meter works precisely, offer you newspaper and water and be as courteous as the airline staff. Yes, it is possible. Only when the government harassment, corruption and over-regulations vanish, that’s what we want!
